These looks inspired by the movies of Paul Thomas Anderson make use of color contrast for drama and tension. This signature technique sets off fireworks through subtle palettes... the effect can be unsettling, precisely what PTA is after! Looks follow three main movie palettes:

There Will Be Blood - these throw a bright flame of orange into subdued, almost monochrome scenes. Deep and dirt - digging for oil, covered in gold.

Magnolia - More gentle, featuring the striking golden browns and ochres of the eponymous flower - shot through with bright pyrotechnics (Tom steals the spotlight a lot, after all.)

Boogie Nights and Inherent Vice - See in the dark - throw some 70s neon pops into the shadows.

PTA likes frames within his frames, try combining these presets with shots of your subject against a bright, light window or within a doorframe.
